Resume format for freshers (free PDF & Word download)

This is a one-page resume format for freshers, built the way campus recruiters and applicant tracking systems in India read resumes: a single column, standard fonts, clear headings and no tables, icons or text boxes. Download it as an editable Word file or a ready PDF, replace the sample details with your own and you are ready to apply.

The sample is filled in for a fictional B.Tech Computer Science graduate so you can see how much to write in each section. Text in [square brackets] is guidance; delete it before you send the resume. If you studied commerce, use the B.Com fresher format instead.

Fill the sections in this order, top to bottom. The downloads already follow it.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Keep it to one page; recruiters screening campus applications skim quickly.
  • Put projects and internship above certifications, because they show what you can do.
  • Use the exact skill names from the job post (for example "Spring Boot", not "Spring framework basics").
  • Save the final version as a PDF named Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf.

Don't

  • Don't add a photo, date of birth, religion or marital status to a private-sector resume.
  • Don't use skill bars, star ratings or two-column templates; ATS software often misreads them.
  • Don't list every school subject or every online course you started.
  • Don't leave the [bracketed] guidance text in the file you send.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a resume, a biodata and a CV in India?

A resume is a one or two page summary of skills, education and results, used for most private-sector jobs. A biodata puts personal details such as date of birth, father's name and address first, and is still asked for by small firms, local employers and some government or contract posts. A CV is a longer, complete academic record used for research, teaching and jobs abroad.

Should a fresher resume be one page or two?

One page. A fresher usually has education, two or three projects, an internship and a few achievements, and all of that fits on a single A4 page in a 10–11 pt font. Recruiters at campus drives and on job portals look through many resumes, so a tight page that puts your best project near the top works better than a padded second page.

Should I put a photo on my fresher resume?

For most private-sector jobs in India, no. A photo takes space, adds nothing to your skills and can confuse ATS parsing. Add one only when the employer or job post explicitly asks for it, which is more common for front-office, aviation, hospitality and some government or biodata-style applications. In that case use a recent passport-size photo with a plain background.

Should I write CGPA or percentage on my resume?

Write whatever your marksheet shows: CGPA out of 10 for most engineering degrees and percentage for Class X and XII. Do not convert unless the employer asks, because companies use different conversion rules. If an application form asks for percentage, use the formula your university prints on the marksheet or transcript.

Is a declaration needed at the end of a fresher resume?

It is not legally required and many private companies do not expect it. However, a short declaration with place, date and your name is still common in India, and some campus placement cells and smaller employers prefer it. If space is tight on a one-page resume, it is the first section you can safely remove.

Should I send my resume in Word or PDF format?

Edit in Word, then send a PDF unless the job post or portal asks for .doc or .docx. A PDF keeps your layout identical on every phone and laptop. Both files on this page are text-based, so applicant tracking systems and portals such as Naukri can read them. Name the file clearly, for example Riya_Sample_Resume.pdf.
