Resume format for experienced professionals (free PDF & Word)

Once you have a few years of work behind you, recruiters care about what you achieved in each job, not your school marks. This experienced resume format leads with a short professional summary and puts your work history, written as result-focused bullets, at the centre. It runs to two A4 pages, which is normal for professionals with more than five years of experience.

The sample is filled in for a fictional senior software engineer so you can see bullet length and detail, but the structure works for any field: sales, finance, operations, HR or marketing. Download the Word file to edit, or the PDF to see the final result. Replace everything in [square brackets] and keep the single-column layout so ATS software reads it correctly.

Section order for this format

Fill the sections in this order, top to bottom. The downloads already follow it.

  1. Name, title and contactName, current title or target role, city, email, mobile and LinkedIn.
  2. Professional summaryThree or four lines: years of experience, domain, core skills and one headline achievement.
  3. Professional experienceMost recent job first. Title, company, city and dates, then 3–6 bullets that start with an action verb and show a result.
  4. Selected projects (optional)One to three projects that show scope or ownership beyond your job bullets.
  5. Key skillsGrouped skill lines that repeat the important keywords from the job description.
  6. EducationHighest degree first with college and year. Marks are optional after a few years of experience.
  7. CertificationsCurrent, relevant certifications with issuer and year.
  8. Awards (optional)Company awards or recognitions, one line each.

This is the same content as the downloadable files. The person is fictional; text in [square brackets] is guidance to replace or delete.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Lead every bullet with a verb and end it with the result: time saved, revenue, users, errors reduced.
  • Tailor the summary and the first two bullets of your latest job to each role you apply for.
  • Keep job titles, company names and dates consistent with your offer letters and relieving letters; background checks compare them.
  • Use two pages only if the second page has real, recent content; otherwise trim to one.

Don't

  • Don't write responsibilities copied from your job description ("responsible for development").
  • Don't include CTC, expected salary or notice period on the resume; share them in the portal form or with the recruiter.
  • Don't keep fresher-era details such as Class X marks, hobbies or a long declaration.
  • Don't use tables or columns for skills; a plain list is safer for ATS parsing.

Frequently asked questions

Should an experienced resume be one page or two pages?

Use one page for up to about three to five years of experience and two pages beyond that, if you have enough relevant work to fill them. Recruiters spend most of their time on the first page, so the summary and your latest role must be there. Never stretch to a third page; cut older roles down to one or two bullets instead.

How far back should my work history go?

Give full detail for roughly the last 10 years. Older jobs can be listed as a single line with title, company and years, or dropped if they are unrelated to the role you want. Keep the dates of every role you list accurate, because background-verification agencies in India check them against your employment records.

Should I mention my current CTC and notice period on my resume?

No. Salary and notice period change with each negotiation and are better shared in the job portal form, the recruiter's questionnaire or a conversation. Putting them on the resume can anchor the offer or get you filtered out before anyone reads your experience. Keep your resume about skills and results.

Do experienced professionals need a declaration and personal details?

Generally no. Most private employers, especially MNCs and product companies, do not expect a declaration, date of birth, father's name or marital status on an experienced resume, and leaving them out saves space for achievements. Add them only if a specific employer, PSU or government process asks for that format.

What is the difference between a resume, a biodata and a CV in India?

A resume is a one or two page summary of skills, education and results, used for most private-sector jobs. A biodata puts personal details such as date of birth, father's name and address first, and is still asked for by small firms, local employers and some government or contract posts. A CV is a longer, complete academic record used for research, teaching and jobs abroad.

Should I send my resume in Word or PDF format?

Edit in Word, then send a PDF unless the job post or portal asks for .doc or .docx. A PDF keeps your layout identical on every phone and laptop. Both files on this page are text-based, so applicant tracking systems and portals such as Naukri can read them. Name the file clearly, for example Riya_Sample_Resume.pdf.
