Data Analyst Resume Example & Format

Data analyst roles in India are open at retailers, banks, insurers, fintechs, consulting firms and analytics services companies, and many people enter them from MIS, operations or commerce backgrounds. Most job descriptions ask for SQL, Excel, a BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau, and increasingly Python. Because the tool list is so standard, the resume has to show what you found and what changed because of it.

Hiring managers look for three things: comfort with messy data (joins, cleaning, validation), the ability to turn analysis into a dashboard or recommendation people actually use, and communication with non-technical teams. Bullets that say "created dashboards" are common; bullets that say who used the dashboard and what decision it changed are much rarer and stand out.

The sample below is for an analyst with about three years of experience who moved from an MIS executive role in insurance to analytics at a retailer.

What makes this resume work

  • Every bullet names who used the analysis and what changed, not just the tool used to make it.
  • SQL skills are described at a useful level of detail (CTEs, window functions), which helps in technical screening.
  • The MIS role is reframed around automation and data quality, making the career switch into analytics look natural.
  • Statistics knowledge is backed by an A/B test bullet, so it is not just a line in the skills section.
  • One public project with a clear question shows curiosity without padding the resume with course assignments.
  • Certifications are recognised and tied to the tools in the job descriptions.

Data Analyst resume mistakes to avoid

  • Writing "created dashboards and reports" without saying who used them or what decision they supported.
  • Listing Python, R, SAS, Tableau, Power BI and Qlik together when you have only used one or two in real work.
  • Filling the projects section with the same Titanic or Iris dataset projects that thousands of applicants submit.
  • Hiding domain knowledge. Retail, BFSI or healthcare experience is valuable and should be visible in the headline or summary.
  • Forgetting communication. Analysts are hired to explain data, so mention presentations, stakeholder reviews or written insights.

Frequently asked questions

What skills should a data analyst resume show in India?

Most roles expect SQL, advanced Excel and one BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau. Python with pandas is increasingly asked for, along with basic statistics like A/B testing and regression. Beyond tools, show business understanding and communication: what you analysed, who used it and what changed. Domain experience in retail, BFSI, e-commerce or healthcare is a plus worth highlighting.

Can I become a data analyst from a non-IT or commerce background?

Yes, many analysts come from commerce, statistics, economics or operations roles. Build strong SQL and Excel skills, learn one BI tool, and complete two or three projects using real public data with a clear business question. On your resume, reframe current work around reporting, data cleaning or process improvement. An MIS or operations analyst role is often a practical first step.

Which certification is most useful for a data analyst?

For Power BI roles, Microsoft's PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst certification is widely recognised. The Google Data Analytics certificate is useful for beginners because it covers the full workflow. Certifications help you clear filters, but interviewers will test SQL and case questions directly, so spend more time on practice and projects than on collecting many certificates.

How do I describe dashboard work on my resume?

Say what the dashboard tracked, who used it and how often, and what it replaced or improved. For example, a weekly sales dashboard for 60 store managers that replaced 12 manual reports is far stronger than "built Power BI dashboards". If it influenced a decision, such as reallocating stock or changing a campaign, include that outcome in the same bullet.

Should a data analyst resume include a GitHub or portfolio link?

It helps, especially for freshers and career switchers. A GitHub repository with clean SQL or Python notebooks, or a published Power BI or Tableau Public dashboard, lets reviewers check your work quickly. Keep only two or three projects with clear questions and conclusions, and write a short README for each so someone can understand it in a minute.
