Business Analyst Resume Example & Format

In India, "business analyst" covers two fairly different jobs. In IT services and GCCs, a BA usually sits between business users and engineering, writing requirements, user stories and test scenarios. In product and analytics teams, the title can mean someone closer to a data analyst. Check which kind the job description wants and tune your resume accordingly.

For IT business analyst roles, recruiters look for requirement elicitation, documentation (BRD, FRD, user stories with acceptance criteria), process mapping, UAT coordination, Agile tools such as Jira and Confluence, and domain knowledge, most often in banking, insurance, healthcare or retail. SQL and basic data skills increasingly appear as well.

The sample below is for an IT business analyst with about five years of experience in insurance claims and policy administration projects.

What makes this resume work

  • The headline puts domain first, which matters because insurance and banking BA roles often prefer domain experience.
  • Documentation work is quantified (number of user stories, defects, users), showing the size of the programme.
  • A process-mapping bullet shows a business outcome, not just a diagram that was produced.
  • SQL is shown being used for data validation during migration, which is a practical and credible BA skill.
  • Certifications are recognised BA and Agile credentials rather than generic online courses.

Business Analyst resume mistakes to avoid

  • Describing only documents produced. Say what the requirements or process changes achieved for the business.
  • Not stating the domain. Banking, insurance and healthcare BA roles often filter on domain experience.
  • Mixing up BA and data analyst keywords without deciding which role you are targeting.
  • Leaving out scale: number of users, stories, defects, releases or stakeholders handled.
  • Listing soft skills such as "good communication" instead of showing workshops, walkthroughs and UAT you ran.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a business analyst and a data analyst resume?

An IT business analyst resume focuses on requirements, process mapping, user stories, UAT and stakeholder work, with domain knowledge prominent. A data analyst resume focuses on SQL, Excel, BI tools, statistics and insights. Many Indian job postings blur the two, so read the responsibilities carefully and lead with the skills they emphasise rather than the title alone.

Which certifications help a business analyst in India?

IIBA certifications (ECBA for early career, CCBA and CBAP for experienced analysts) are the most recognised BA credentials. Agile certifications such as PSPO, CSPO or SAFe POPM help in Scrum teams. Domain certifications, such as insurance or banking courses, can also help. List only what you have completed, and keep the section short so it supports your experience rather than replacing it.

Do business analysts need SQL?

It is increasingly expected, even for requirement-focused roles. BAs use SQL to validate data during migrations, investigate defects, answer stakeholder questions and support UAT. You do not need advanced skills, but joins, filters, aggregations and basic subqueries are useful. If you use SQL at work, show it in a bullet with a concrete example, not only in the skills list.

How can a fresher become a business analyst?

Freshers often enter through management trainee, junior BA or analyst roles at IT services firms, consulting companies or banks. Build a resume around relevant projects, internships and coursework: process improvement studies, requirement documents for a sample app, SQL and Excel skills, and any domain exposure. An MBA helps for some roles, and an ECBA certification can support an entry-level application.
