Data Scientist Resume Example & Format

Data science hiring in India spans fintech lenders, e-commerce, consulting and analytics firms, GCCs of global banks and retailers, and a growing number of teams building on large language models. Titles and expectations vary: some roles are close to analytics, others are closer to machine learning engineering. Read the job description carefully and shape your resume toward the side it leans on.

Across these roles, reviewers look for models that reached production or influenced a decision, sound evaluation (the right metric, a fair baseline, a holdout or experiment), and the engineering around models: pipelines, monitoring and deployment. A resume full of algorithms without outcomes, or Kaggle-style accuracy numbers without business context, is common and easy to pass over.

The sample below is for a data scientist with about five years of experience in credit risk, forecasting and NLP.

Summary

Data scientist with 5 years of experience building machine learning models that run in production, mainly for credit risk, demand forecasting and text classification. Works across the full cycle, from problem framing and feature engineering to deployment, monitoring and explaining results to business and risk teams.

Experience

Data Scientist

Fabrikam Lending Pvt. Ltd. · Bengaluru

  • Built a gradient-boosted (XGBoost) credit risk model for first-time borrowers using bureau and bank-statement features; AUC improved from 0.71 to 0.78 over the previous scorecard on an out-of-time sample.
  • Ran a 3-month champion–challenger pilot with the risk team; the new model allowed higher approvals in the pilot segment at a similar early delinquency rate.
  • Fine-tuned a multilingual transformer to classify customer support tickets, including Hindi–English code-mixed text, auto-routing about 55% of tickets with human review for low-confidence cases.
  • Set up MLflow tracking, scheduled retraining and drift monitoring for 4 production models, with SHAP-based reason codes for credit decisions.

Associate Data Scientist

Northwind Analytics · Chennai

  • Built weekly SKU-level demand forecasts for an FMCG client using LightGBM and hierarchical reconciliation, reducing forecast error (MAPE) from 18% to 11% on key categories.
  • Created a customer segmentation with k-means on transaction data that the client used to redesign its loyalty tiers.
  • Packaged models as FastAPI services in Docker for the client's engineering team and wrote handover documentation.

Projects

Internal policy Q&A assistant

Python, embeddings, vector search, LLM API

  • Prototype retrieval-augmented assistant over 400 internal policy documents, evaluated on a hand-labelled question set before a limited pilot.

Skills

  • ML & statistics: Supervised learning, Gradient boosting, Time series forecasting, Model evaluation, Experiment design
  • NLP & GenAI: Transformers (Hugging Face), Text classification, Embeddings, Retrieval-augmented generation
  • Languages & libraries: Python, SQL, scikit-learn, XGBoost, LightGBM, PyTorch, pandas
  • MLOps: MLflow, Docker, FastAPI, Airflow, AWS SageMaker, Model monitoring

Education

M.Tech, Data Science

Example Institute of Technology · Chennai · Thesis: Forecasting intermittent demand in retail

B.Tech, Electronics and Communication Engineering

Sample Engineering College · Coimbatore

Achievements

  • Kaggle Notebooks Expert
  • Speaker at a city data science meetup on credit model explainability

What makes this resume work

  • Model results are reported with the right metric and a baseline, and the evaluation method (out-of-time, pilot) is stated.
  • Business outcomes from the risk pilot are described carefully, without overstating what the model alone achieved.
  • Production and MLOps work is visible, which separates this profile from notebook-only candidates.
  • NLP and GenAI experience appears as a concrete project with evaluation, rather than as a buzzword.
  • The consulting role shows range (forecasting, segmentation) and handover to engineering teams.
  • Education includes a relevant thesis topic, which supports the forecasting experience.

Data Scientist resume mistakes to avoid

  • Reporting accuracy on an imbalanced problem, or any metric without a baseline. Use the metric that fits the problem and compare it with what existed.
  • Listing a dozen algorithms with no sign that any model reached production or changed a decision.
  • Claiming that a model alone increased revenue by a large figure without explaining how it was measured.
  • Overusing GenAI buzzwords. Describe what you built with LLMs and how you evaluated it.
  • Skipping SQL and data engineering skills, which most teams test because real data rarely arrives clean.

Frequently asked questions

What should a data scientist resume highlight?

Highlight problems you solved with models, how you measured success, and whether the model reached production or influenced a decision. Include the core stack (Python, SQL, scikit-learn, a gradient boosting library, a deep learning framework), MLOps tools you used and your domain. Two or three strong, well-explained projects or roles beat a long list of algorithms and online courses.

Do I need a master's degree or PhD for data science roles in India?

Not always. Many industry roles hire candidates with a B.Tech or other bachelor's degree who can show strong statistics, coding and real projects. Research-heavy roles and some GCC or lab teams do prefer a master's or PhD. If you do not have one, make up for it with production experience, solid evaluation in your projects and clear explanations in interviews.

How should I show GenAI or LLM experience on my resume?

Describe the use case, the approach and how you evaluated it. For example, a retrieval-augmented assistant over internal documents, tested on a labelled question set, with notes on latency and failure cases. Mention models or APIs, vector search, prompt design and guardrails only where you used them. Vague phrases like "worked on generative AI" add little without that detail.

Are Kaggle competitions useful on a data scientist resume?

They can help, especially early in your career, if you list a strong rank or a medal and explain your approach briefly. Reviewers know competitions differ from real work, where framing the problem, cleaning data and deployment matter more. Pair Kaggle results with at least one project or job bullet that shows end-to-end work and business context.
