Accountant Resume Example & Format

Accountant roles in Indian small and mid-sized businesses usually cover the full cycle: day-to-day entries in Tally, GST returns and reconciliation, TDS deduction and returns, bank and vendor reconciliations, month-end closing and support for statutory audits. Manufacturing firms, traders, CA practices, hospitals and service companies all hire for this mix, and many listings mention Tally Prime and GST by name.

Employers want to know which returns you file yourself, how many GSTINs or entities you handle, whether you reconcile input tax credit against GSTR-2B, and how comfortable you are with TDS, e-invoicing and e-way bills. Accuracy and deadlines matter more than fancy wording, so bullets that show volume, timeliness and errors avoided work best.

The sample below is for an accountant with about five years of experience, starting as an accounts assistant in a CA firm and now handling the books and compliance for a textile manufacturer with two GST registrations.

What makes this resume work

  • Specific returns are named (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9, 26Q, 24Q), which is exactly what employers and ATS filters search for.
  • Volume and scope are clear: number of GSTINs, monthly vouchers and clients handled at the CA firm.
  • The ITC recovery figure ties reconciliation work to a money outcome that a business owner understands.
  • On-time filing streaks and a fixed month-end closing date show reliability, the main quality employers look for.
  • CA firm experience is framed as multi-client exposure, which helps when moving into an in-house role.
  • Tools are listed with versions (Tally Prime and ERP 9), since employers often ask which one you have used.

Accountant resume mistakes to avoid

  • Writing "knowledge of GST and Tally" without saying which returns you file and how many registrations you handle.
  • Mixing up what you did yourself and what you supported. Be clear when a CA or senior signed off and you prepared the data.
  • Leaving out reconciliation work, which is one of the most valued and time-consuming parts of the job.
  • Listing only Tally and ignoring Excel skills, even though most management reports are still built in Excel.
  • Adding personal details like date of birth, father's name and a photo in place of compliance and reporting experience.

Frequently asked questions

What should an accountant resume with Tally and GST include?

Include the accounting work you handle (entries, ledgers, closing), the GST returns you file and how many GSTINs, ITC reconciliation, TDS deductions and returns, bank and vendor reconciliations, and audit support. Name your tools, such as Tally Prime, the GST portal, TRACES and Excel. Add your commerce education and any Tally or GST course certificate.

Is Tally Prime enough or should I learn other accounting software?

Tally Prime covers a large share of small and mid-sized business openings in India, so it is the right base. For larger companies and multinationals, knowledge of an ERP such as SAP or Oracle, or cloud tools like Zoho Books, can widen your options. Advanced Excel is useful everywhere. List only software you have used for real entries or reports.

Should I mention CA firm articleship or assistant experience?

Yes. CA firm experience shows exposure to many businesses, audits and filing deadlines, which in-house employers value. Describe the number and type of clients, the returns you prepared or filed and the audit work you supported. Make clear which tasks you did independently and which you prepared for review.

How do I show GST reconciliation skills on my resume?

Describe the process and the result. For example, say that you reconcile the purchase register with GSTR-2B monthly, follow up with vendors on missing or incorrect invoices and track ITC at risk. If you can, add a value, such as ITC recovered or mismatches resolved in a year. This shows you understand both the rules and the cash impact.

Should I mention my notice period and salary on my resume?

Leave salary off the resume. Notice period can usually be shared in the application form or on the first call. If you can join quickly, mentioning it in your cover message helps, because many accounting roles open close to filing or audit deadlines. Keep the resume focused on the compliance and reporting work you handle.

Is a resume for an accountant one page or two?

One page works for most accountants with up to five or six years of experience. If you have handled multiple entities, audits and a range of compliance work over many years, two pages is acceptable. Keep the most recent role and your GST, TDS and reconciliation experience on the first page, where employers look first.
