Software Engineer (2 Years) Resume Example & Format

Two years in is a common point for engineers in India to try moving from an IT services company to a product company, startup or GCC. The challenge is that services work is often described in terms of clients, training programmes and support tickets, while product companies read a resume for engineering decisions, code you owned and measurable results.

At this level, product company recruiters usually check your core language, framework and database, whether you have shipped features rather than only maintained them, and whether you show problem-solving signals such as a consistent coding profile or a solid side project. Their interviews often include data structures and algorithms, so your resume should not promise skills that you cannot defend in a coding round.

The sample below is for a systems engineer with about two years at a large services company, working on a Java and React application for a banking client. It reframes services work around ownership and adds one product-style side project to fill gaps the day job did not cover.

Summary

Software engineer with 2 years of experience building and maintaining Java Spring Boot services and React screens for a banking client. Has delivered features end to end, automated manual checks and fixed production issues under tight release timelines. Experience

Systems Engineer

Relecloud Technologies Ltd. · Bengaluru

  • Built a beneficiary management feature (Spring Boot APIs and React screens) for a bank's corporate net banking portal, used by 2,000+ business customers.
  • Replaced a manual daily check of failed fund transfers with a scheduled Spring Batch job and email report, saving the support team about 1.5 hours a day.
  • Fixed a race condition in the transaction limit check that occasionally allowed duplicate approvals, adding a database lock and regression tests.
  • Reduced React bundle size for the dashboard by 30% by lazy-loading report modules and removing an unused charting library.
  • Wrote 150+ JUnit and React Testing Library tests across 3 modules and took part in code reviews for 4 team members.

Systems Engineer Trainee

Relecloud Technologies Ltd. · Mysuru

  • Completed a 12-week Java full stack training programme covering Spring Boot, SQL, React and Git, finishing in the top 10% of the batch assessment.
  • Built a library management capstone with a 4-member team, handling the REST API and MySQL schema.

Projects

Link shortener with analytics

Node.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Redis, React

  • Deployed URL shortener with click analytics, rate limiting and a Redis cache; load-tested to about 500 requests per second on a small VM.
  • Wrote a short design note covering the ID generation scheme, cache strategy and trade-offs, linked from the README.

Skills

  • Languages: Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, SQL, Python basics
  • Frameworks: Spring Boot, Spring Batch, React, Node.js basics
  • Data: Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis basics
  • Engineering: Data structures and algorithms, REST API design, Unit testing, Code review, Git
  • Tools: Docker, Jenkins, Jira, Postman, Linux

Education

B.Tech, Electronics and Communication Engineering

Example Institute of Technology · Bhubaneswar · CGPA 8.5 / 10

Achievements

  • LeetCode contest rating 1,850+ (top 10% of participants)

What makes this resume work

  • The headline states the target (product engineering) so a recruiter immediately understands the intended move.
  • Services work is written as features, automations and bug fixes the candidate owned, with the client kept in the background.
  • The training programme is kept to two short bullets instead of dominating the first job entry.
  • A deployed side project with a design note fills the gap in scale and system design that the day job did not offer.
  • The coding profile is linked and summarised, which product company recruiters often check for early-career candidates.
  • The ECE degree is listed plainly; strong engineering bullets make the non-CS background a non-issue.

Software Engineer (2 Years) resume mistakes to avoid

  • Leading with the client's name and process terms like "onsite-offshore coordination" instead of what you built.
  • Writing the training programme as if it were project experience, or listing every module of the curriculum.
  • Claiming system design or microservices expertise at two years without a project that shows it.
  • Listing a coding profile with very few solved problems. Link it only if it shows consistent effort.
  • Keeping a fresher-style resume with Class X and XII marks above work experience.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move from a service company to a product company with 2 years of experience?

Rewrite your bullets around features you built, bugs you fixed and improvements you made, with numbers where possible. Add a deployed side project if your day job is narrow, practise data structures and algorithms consistently, and apply through referrals as well as portals. Tailor the headline and summary to the product role so recruiters see the intended move immediately.

Should I mention my notice period on my resume?

It is usually better to leave it off the resume and share it in portal fields or on the recruiter call. Many services companies have 60 to 90 day notice periods, which some product companies weigh during shortlisting, so be ready to discuss buyout or early release options. If you are already serving notice, say so in your application message.

Should I include my company's training programme on my resume?

Include it briefly, as a short trainee entry or one line under your first role, especially if you completed a capstone or ranked well in assessments. Do not list every topic covered. After two years, the focus should be on what you built on real projects, so the training should take no more than two lines.

Do I need side projects at 2 years of experience?

They are not required, but they help when your services work does not show the stack or scale a product company wants. One well-built, deployed project with tests and a clear README is enough. Choose something that shows backend depth, such as caching, rate limiting or background jobs, rather than another basic to-do app.

Should I put my LeetCode or Codeforces rating on my resume?

Add it if it is a real signal, such as a solid contest rating or several hundred problems solved consistently over time. Put the profile link in the header and, if helpful, one line under achievements. Recruiters and engineers may open it, so keep it active. A thin profile is better left off the resume.
