Internship Resume Example & Format

Students in India usually look for internships in their second or third year, through the college training and placement cell, internship portals, LinkedIn, company career pages, cold emails and referrals from seniors. Summer internships between May and July are the most common, but many startups also hire part-time or remote interns during the semester for marketing, content, business development, operations, design, finance and tech work.

An internship resume is judged differently from a job resume. Recruiters do not expect work experience; they look for signs that you can learn quickly and deliver: course projects, club and fest responsibilities, freelance or volunteer work, a portfolio or GitHub link, and relevant tools. They also want practical details, such as your availability dates, whether you can work remote or in office, and your city, so put those on the resume itself.

The sample below is for a second-year BBA student applying for marketing and business development internships, with volunteer work, fest responsibilities and two self-driven projects.

What makes this resume work

  • Volunteer and fest work is written like experience, with tasks, numbers and outcomes, which is what internship recruiters look for.
  • Two self-started projects show initiative and real skills, filling the space that full-time experience would take.
  • Availability dates, duration and location are stated clearly, answering the first practical question every internship recruiter has.
  • The headline names the internship type, so the resume is not mistaken for a generic student CV.
  • Skills are practical tools the student has used, not personality traits like hard-working or punctual.
  • Education shows current year and semester CGPA, plus Class XII, without padding with Class X details or hobbies.

Internship resume mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving the experience section empty. College clubs, fests, volunteering and freelance work all count for an internship.
  • Filling the resume with soft skills like "hard-working" and "quick learner" instead of showing them through work.
  • Not mentioning availability dates, internship duration or whether you can work remote or in office.
  • Sending the same resume for marketing, finance and tech internships without changing the headline and skills.
  • Adding a photo, full address, parents' names and hobbies. Use the space for projects and responsibilities.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a resume for an internship with no experience?

Treat college clubs, fest roles, volunteering, freelance work and course projects as your experience. Write each like a job: what you did, for whom, and one result with a number where possible. Add a short summary naming the internship you want, a skills section of tools you have used, and your availability. One page with real activities beats a padded two-page CV.

What should I write in the objective of an internship resume?

Write two lines: your course and year, the type of internship you want, the skills you bring and when you are available. For example: a second-year BBA student with social media and market research experience, looking for an 8-week marketing internship from May. Avoid lines like "to gain exposure in a reputed organisation", which every applicant writes.

Is CGPA needed on an internship resume?

Include it if you have one, with the semesters it covers. Many companies and college placement cells check academics even for internships, and a missing CGPA can look like you are hiding something. If your CGPA is low, keep it and let your projects, responsibilities and skills do the work. Class XII marks are useful in the first two years.

Should an internship resume be 1 page or 2?

Always one page. Internship recruiters review many applications quickly and expect students to have limited experience. A single page with your education, two or three activities written as experience, one or two projects, skills and availability is ideal. If you have more, link a portfolio, GitHub or LinkedIn profile instead of adding a second page.

When should students start applying for summer internships?

Many companies and startups start posting summer internships several months in advance, and some large companies hire through campus processes earlier in the year. Start preparing your resume and portfolio early, apply steadily as postings appear, and follow up politely. Part-time and remote internships during the semester are posted year-round and can build experience before the summer.

Should I mention internship availability on my resume?

Yes. Add a short line or section with the months you are available, the duration, whether you can work full-time or part-time, and whether you prefer remote, hybrid or in office, with your city. It saves the recruiter a question and helps you get shortlisted for internships that match your dates. Keep it accurate to avoid offers you cannot accept.
